Ihringen-Breisach, 2018
Pop and rock classics from past decades suddenly take on a fresh new presence, sounding youthful, vibrant, and dynamic. This is thanks to the often unconventional arrangements by Joachim Storl and Eric Karle. For example, a pop song like 'There's Something in the Water' is transformed into a South American samba, while a rock classic by Oasis is reimagined as a groovy swing number.
The highly expressive solo vocals of singers Annabel Krieg and Rebecca Hintereck, together with the many multi-part harmonies, bring a refreshing quality to the pieces. The versatile guitar playing of fingerstyle specialist Joachim Storl and the present, at times powerfully dynamic, at times playful and virtuosic drumming of Eric Karle are always precisely tailored to the style and character of each piece. The overall sound is highly authentic and, despite the minimal instrumentation, leaves nothing to be desired.

"Storl & Friends" at Jazztone Lörrach
After the first pieces performed by Storl & Friends at Haagensteg, it quickly became clear to the audience that Joachim Storl (guitar), Claudia Thym (saxophone and flute), Karsten Kramer (keyboard), Martin Hess (bass), and Eric Karle (drums) had rehearsed together extensively. Their repertoire-consisting entirely of original compositions, mostly romantic, dreamy, and inspired by South American sounds-was presented with perfect coordination and remarkable harmony.
The musical arrangements, in which Storl masterfully captures and expresses moods through melody, were so meticulously crafted that there was no room for improvisation. In these guitar compositions, improvisation would have been out of place and would have disrupted the gentle, softly swinging flow of the music.
This allowed the audience to simply lean back, relax, and enjoy this balm for the ears and soul, leaving the stress of the week behind.

(...) "Whatever you choose to call it, it doesn't change the outstanding quality and the shameless entertainment value." (...) "As I said before: Fusion Jazz. From Germany. That alone is
remarkable. Very nice."
Michael Arens' Soul Train, Germany's No. 1 Soul Music Magazine, October 2008
"Joachim Storl delivers a relaxed piece of music with his friends. The 18(!) tracks on this album range between Bossa Nova, Samba, Jazz, and Swing. Everything comes across as honest and full of
joy in playing. The music is equally suited for attentive listening or as background for a cozy reading afternoon at home."
Regensburger Stadtzeitung, January 2009
"The Ihringen-based guitarist Joachim Storl and his four musician friends from across the region have recorded an instrumental album blending Brazil-inspired sounds with fusion jazz, folk, and
funk. (...) You can relax to it, but you can also listen attentively."
Thomas Steiner, Badische Zeitung, September 19, 2008
On this CD, we present traditional tangos from South America, Russia, and Armenia.

Violinist Lisa Kanchukh and Guitarist Joachim Storl Impress at the Opening Concert of 'Kultur uff'm Wald' with Tango and Swinging Original Compositions
Herrischried - Under the theme "Tango & More," violinist Lisa Kanchukh and guitarist Joachim Storl opened the ninth season of the 'Kultur uff'm Wald' concert series in the Rotmooshalle lecture hall. Although the hall was not completely full, the duo impressively showcased the diversity of tangos from various countries and enchanted the audience with gentle, lightly swinging original compositions by Joachim Storl. The enthusiastic applause was repeatedly punctuated by shouts of "Bravo!"
In pieces such as "Por una cabeza" by Carlos Gardel, one of the founding fathers of tango, and "Cumparsita," one of Argentina's most famous tangos, Lisa Kanchukh captivated listeners with agile
melodic flourishes and a radiant violin tone that soared effortlessly into the highest registers. She also shone with velvety, deep sounds in Joachim Storl's sambas.
Joachim Storl impressed with rhythmic precision, distinctive chord accompaniments, and virtuosic solos. Using clever techniques, he recorded accompaniment parts live and played them back
instantly as an additional "instrument," effectively doubling the soundscape.
The program also included a deeply melancholic Armenian tango from the 1970s, characterized by subtle melodic slides that never slipped into sentimentality. The Bossa Nova-style piece "Blue Dreams" created a dreamy atmosphere, while lively klezmer-inspired tangos showcased Kanchukh's energetic double stops and gypsy-like virtuosic runs. Other highlights were the elegance of a "Parisian Tango" and the Viennese charm of "Champagne Spritzers."
The remarkable versatility of violin and guitar demonstrated by Lisa Kanchukh and Joachim Storl was further enhanced by Storl's original compositions. Pieces such as "Atempause" (a melancholic, arpeggiated melody reminiscent of raindrops) and "Gefühlsduselei" (a samba that presents the guitar as both percussion and lead instrument) added further depth to their performance. Together, they delivered a captivating concert that left the audience relaxed and inspired.

Deeply melancholic, a tango from 1970s Armenia resounded, with subtle slides in the melody, avoiding any descent into sentimentality.
The misty "Blue Dreams" in Bossa Nova style invited listeners to let their minds wander. In Yiddish tangos, the young violinist captivated the audience with lively klezmer sounds, bold double stops reminiscent of gypsy ensembles, and spirited, virtuosic runs.
The radiant elegance of the "Parisian Tango" and the authentic Viennese charm that filled the hall during the "Champagne Spritzers" added further nuance to these enchanting tango creations.
The remarkable variety and flexibility of the violin-guitar duo, as demonstrated by Lisa Kanchukh and Joachim Storl throughout their program, were perfected by Storl's original compositions. Gentle, pearling raindrops filled the air with the arpeggiated accompaniment of the melancholic "Atempause," while the piece "Gefühlsduselei" in South American samba style showcased the guitar as both percussion and a brilliant solo instrument. The violin beautifully complemented this with delicate interjections, creating a harmonious blend.

In the rock oratorio "Einer aus Nazareth," Jesus is not depicted as the divine Son of God who stands above all human suffering.
Instead, he is portrayed as deeply human, experiencing emotions such as fear, anger, love, and resignation. His disciples place great expectations on him-especially Judas, who plays a central role and urges Jesus to confront the Roman occupation directly.
The CD recording was produced during my studies at PH Freiburg, mostly with amateur musicians and on a very limited budget. It was also created under significant time pressure, and at that point I had much less experience with recording quality and techniques, so some compromises had to be made in this area.
Nevertheless, the live performances in 1991, 1992, and 1993 were very successful and deeply moved the audiences. Perhaps this work could return to the stage one day, as its themes are still relevant today.
